The Fisherman Of Halicarnassos

Bodrum, pretty and and lovely town on the South Aegean coast has been a favourite resort for over 50 years, partly due to a Turkish poet and writer called The Fisherman Of Halicarnassos who was exiled to Bodrum because of his unpopular political views. His writings about Bodrum captured the imagination of like-minded romantics and were largely responsible for creating Bodrum's Bohemian atmosphere.
None of Turkey’s other holiday destinations have such a different image as Bodrum.

This lively town has something to offer for everyone. Day or night, Bodrum never stands still, with its numerous bars, restaurants, discos and maze of narrow winding streets crammed to bursting with all manner of shops.

Everyone has a different Bodrum of their own. Once you go you will fall in love not only with its natural beauty and historical sites but also with its friendly people and keep coming back. Who knows maybe you will decide moving to Bodrum to spend the rest of your life like many others did.  Places Which You Must See

BODRUM CASTLE
The most prominent feature of Bodrum must be the Castle of St. Peter. Whether entering the town by land or sea, one cannot help but be struck by the Castle's sturdy presence. One of the world's best preserved monuments from medieval times, it stands as a solid testament to the Bodrum area as a place worth defending.
Bodrum Castle was built by knights of Rhodes in 15 century A.D. and it serves as the world’s biggest underwater archeological musuem in which a wide range of underwater findings are displayed.
One of the most attractive openings in the Castle is the private hall devoted exclusively to the display of the Carian princess dates back to 360 B.C.

Mausoleum
2400 years ago from today satrap of Caria; King Mausolos’s wife Artemis 2nd built a monumental tomb, the Mausoleum one of the wonders of the ancient world, upon the death of her husband to immortalize the memory of him. The Mausoleum was completed around 350 BC.

And the beauty of the Mausoleum was not only in the structure itself, but in the decorations and statues that adorned the outside at different levels on the podium and the roof. These were tens of life-size as well as under and over life-size free-standing statues of people, lions, horses, and other animals.

Antique Theatre of Bodrum
Foremost of the monumental constructions that lasted untill today from the period of antiquity is the classical Antique Theatre of Bodrum. It is one of the oldest theatres in Asia Minor. It has a capacity of 10.000 audience and three sections.Orchestra(Half circle),Scene(Stage Building) and Cavea (sitting area) It was built during the Carian reign in the Hellenistic age (330 - 30 BC.) It shows great similarities with the Epidauros Theatre in Greece. The stage was probably built in two stories. The radius of the Theatron site is 57m.

Myndus Gate
Located on the west side of Bodrum, Myndus Gate is one of the two entrances of ancient Halicarnassus. It was part of the towns wall. The gate is named after the place Myndos because it faces the ancient Myndos place (now Gümüslük). It is described as Tripollion because the gate had three towers. In front of the gate was a ditch of 8 meters depth and 15 meters long. Tombs dates back to Hellenistic and Roman Times were found here in the last century. The soldier of Alexander The Great could hardly come into the town of Halicarnassos due to the strong city walls in 333 B.C.

Everyone has a different Bodrum of their own. Once you go you will fall in love not only with its natural beauty and historical sites but also with its friendly people and keep coming back.

Historical Places Around Bodrum
ANCIENT CITY OF EPHESUS Ancient Ionian Greek city; its ruins lie near the modern village of Selcuk in Turkey. It was situated south of the Cayster River, and was the site of the Temple of Artemis. Traditionally founded by the Carians, it was one of the 12 Ionian Cities and was involved in the Persian and Peloponnesian wars. It was taken by Alexander the Great c.334 BC and prospered throughout the Hellenistic period. It passed to Rome in 133 BC; under Augustus it became the capital of the Roman province of Asia. It was an early seat of Christianity, visited by St. Paul, and the recipient of the Epistle to the Ephesians. The Goths destroyed the city and temple in AD 262; neither ever recovered. There are extensively excavated ruins at the modern site.

TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS:
To the right of the road leading to Kusadasi can be seen the ruins of the Temple of Artemis (Diana), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Artemis, the virgin goddess of nature, and protectress of women in childbirth is mentioned in the Iliad with the phrase: Praise be to Artemis! She, who would water her horses at the reed-filled Meles river, then pass speedily through Smyrna on her golden chariot towards the vineyards of Coloros."

KUSADASI has a rich and varied history. A small settlement founded by lonian settlers and known as Neapolis, is known to have existed at the site even in ancient times, but it was always over shadowed by its mighty neighbor Ephesus.
After the Hellenistic Period, the Romans and the Byzantines dominated Kusadasi. The town was an important commercial port and a foreign colony under Venetian and Genoese merchants in the 14th century and was called ScalaNouva (the new port) and medieval chronicles mention the presence of foreign consulates and warehouses. The Turks preferred to live mainly inland on the foothills around Pilavtepe near the ancient settlement known as Andızkule.
After a period of various Seljuk princes and Crusader knights the ottoman Turks conquered Kusadasi in 1413.
The town took its present from during the early 17th century when Öküz Mehmet Pasha was a grand vizier of Ottoman Empire. He built the city walls, a mosque complex consisting of a mosque, an Inn and a Turkish bath.

There is a possibility to go to Kos and Rhodes (Greek Islands) by Ferryboat and Hydrofoils. But these are not guided tours. Ferryboats and hydrofoils depart early in the morning and return evening. Kos by ferry approximately 45 minutes; by hydrofoil 25 minutes Rhodes only by hydrofoil approximately 2 hours 15 minutes.
