COS TOWN
The Town of Kos is built in the North Eastern end of the island and lies flat, flooded with greenery. Ancient and modern buildings coexist and history seems to overshadow the present. The streets are wide, lined with trees and they are suitable for both cycling and walking. The street plan of the town is enviable. Along the central coastal road lies the little harbour of the town, where excursion boats embark their passengers for daily excursions to nearby islands. On the Eastern side of the port the Castle of the Knights of St. John stands magnificent. Along the narrow lanes of the Old Town, a lot of tourists shops sell lovely souvenirs or works of local craftsmen. The Municipality of Kos, trying to render the whole district to pedestrians and prevent the passing of vehicles, attempted a reformation of the historic center, so as to be used for recreation or walking purposes only.

The Nymphaion
The Nymphaion faces the Public Baths along a narrow street of the old town. It was built between the 2nd and 4th centuries BC as a "Vespassiani" (public urinal). When it was discovered it was given the name Nymphaion, because its beauty gave in the appearance of a sanctuary to all goddesses. The yard is full of mosaics and has a large well. On three sides there are eleven pillars and on the fourth above the well are two projections, where statues must have stood. The interior marble walls are 1.83 m. high and had drainage dotches running along their bases. This truly beautiful building can be viewed from a window reached by a staircase at the side.

The Odeon
This was built in the 3rd century and situated opposite the excavations of XYSTOS and on the other side of the street Grigoriou 5th. It was discovered by the archeologist Luciano Lavrenzi at the excavations that ware carried out in 1929 in quite good condition. An intire restoration finished in 2001. It has nine marble steps with a stair-head that separates them from 5 other built steps. Probably the stair-head served to separate the first from the second class. At the extremities there are 18 marble steps, and the entire amphitheatric assembly of the steps is supported on domed chambers. Here were found hidden many ancient statues, among wich the most important is that of Hippocrates wich to-day is at the Museum.
